Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui jenis-jenis kesalahan tata bahasa mahasiswa dalam menulis latar belakang penelitian di Program Studi Bahasa Inggris UMB dan untuk mengetahui jenis kesalahan tata bahasa mahasiswa yang paling dominan dalam menulis latar belakang penelitian di Program Studi Bahasa Inggris di UMB. Penelitian ini menggunakan metoded eskriptif kualitatif. Hasil penelitian, terdapat empat jenis kesalahan tata bahasa yang melatar belakangi penelitian ini: 1) omission (34 frekuensi, 23,61%), 2) addition (22 frekuensi, 15,27%), 3) selection (74 frekuensi, 51,38%), 4) ordering (14 frekuensi, 9,72%). Error of selection merupakan kesalahan yang paling dominan pada latar belakang penelitian mahasiswa Program Studi Bahasa Inggris UMB.
