ENGLISH STUDENTS STRATEGIES TO ACHIEVE
450 TOEFL SCORE AT UPT BAHASA OF
MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY OF BENGKULU

The objective of this research was to investigate English Students
Strategies to achieve 450 TOEFL score at UPT bahasa of Muhammadiyah
University of Bengkulu, especially in skill Structure and Written Expression. The
research design of this research used descriptive qualitative method. The
instrument used was a questionnaire based on the Philips Deborah (2001) book
Longman Complete Course for the TOEFL Test and the research sample was
taken through purposive sampling with the first Toefl Test category still failed to
reach a score of 450, but the second test they achieve to score 450 and found 17
students. who meet these criteria out of 60 population. From this research, it
shows that students did not understand 9 materials from total 16 materials that are
often used by the UPT Language of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu
when doing the TOEFL Test. Therefore, to answered the nine materials, the
researcher conducted research to answered what strategies students used to
increase the Toefl 450 score. The results of this research indicated from 17
students as participant, 13 students answer they often used strategies based on the
Philips Deborah (2001) book to understand 9 materials they weakness in skill
structure and written expression. With the highest percentation used, that is
76.5%. The researcher suggest that English students should increase their
knowledge of the TOEFL, students have to learn a lot about the strategies and
skills in the Toefl Test, so they will not difficulties when they want to finish their
study.
