ACADEMIC PHRASES ON INTRODUCTION SECTION WRITTEN BY ENGLISH STUDENTS OF RESEARCH PAPER IN MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY OF BENGKULU

The objective of this research was to investigate the academic phrases on theses introduction section written by English students of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. The primary purpose of this research is to describe about academic phrases used on introduction section of students theses. The research design of this research used qualitative method. The instrument was table analysis about academic phrases by John (2014), and rhetorical move by Swales (1990) : Move 1, Move 2, and Move 3. The result of this study showed that there were only a few of academic phrases on establishing a territory to claim the important of the research found on students theses introduction section in move 1. Second, mostly of English students did not used academic phrases on research gap to claim the differences between the research to the prior research in move 2 in writing introduction section of theses. Third, mostly of English students did not used academic phrases to claim the purposes of the research in move 3 in writing introduction section of theses
