This research aims to analyze the hedges used in communication by major and minor character in the short stories of Jakarta Post. In this study, researchers used a descriptive qualitative method. The object of this research is 22 short stories Jakarta Post 2018-2019 editions. This research instrument is Taxonomy of Hedges table based on the theory of Salager-Meyer (1997): Modal auxiliary verbs; Modal lexical verbs; Adjectival, adverbial and nominal modal phrases; Approximators of degree, quantity, frequency, and time; Introductory phrases; “If” clauses; and Compound hedges. The result of this research, the researcher only found 4 of hedges expression that used by major and minor character in the short story of Jakarta post, there are: Modal auxiliary verbs; Approximators of degree, quantity, frequency, and time; Introductory phrases; and “If clauses”. And the dominant hedges that used by major and minor character in the short story of Jakarta post is Modal auxiliary verbs. Based on the result above, the researcher give suggest: for te students: the result of this research may give valuable information and enrich knowledge about hedges used in communication by major and minor characters in the short story of Jakarta post and for the further researcher: they can research in the same field, but it will be better to focus on one hedges expression.
