BENGKULU ACADEMIC YEAR OF 2020/2021

Description

The objective of this research was to investigate what is the factor that
contributes students’ anxiety and what are the strategies that used by the students
in reducing anxiety that the students’ of 3rd semester Academic Year of
2020/2021 in Speaking for Speech class in English Education Program
experience.
The researcher used three instrument to gain information, those are; a)
interview guide; b) questionnaire; and c) google form. The research design of this
research used descriptive qualitative method. The researcher choose the third
semester English Department which consists 28 students. In collecting the data,
the researcher gave questionnaire-giving and interview. Besides, the researcher
used three major phases of the data analysis, they were: data reduction, data
display, and conclusion drawing verification.
The results of this research showed there are some strategies in reducing
speaking anxiety based on Kondo and Ying Ling theory; preparation, relaxation,
positive thinking, peer seeking, and resignation. Most students chose preparation
as their strategy with 33%, followed by positive thinking with 25%, peer-seeking
in 21%, relaxations 14%, and the least choice was resignation with 4%. There are
also some factor that contributes anxiety. Those are; material, lecturer, and the
students themselves. Material with 18% became the lowest factor, then the
anxiety caused by the lecturer for 26%, meanwhile the highest factor was the
students themselves with percentage of 56%.
The students should know the right factor that contributing anxiety. By
knowing the factor, they can choose the right treatment/strategy to reduce the
speaking anxiety. Besides, The lecturers together with the students need to build
the confidence in speaking class. By doing this, the learning process will be
efficient and produces great outputs.
