THE GENERAL ROLE OF ISLAM IN POVERTY REDUCTION IN INDONESIA

Subject

Role of Islam, poverty, Indonesia

Description

The population of Indonesia which is Muslim is approximately 229 million people or 87% of 264 million population of Indonesia (in 2017) so that Islam is a religion that is embraced by the majority of the Indonesian population. Muslims in Indonesia must take a role in development to improve welfare and reduce poverty in the country of Indonesia. The problem of poverty in Indonesia is still a problem that cannot be resolved quickly.
Based on data from the Central Statistics Agency, the number of poor people in Indonesia in March 2018 was 25.95 million people. This number is smaller than the total poor population in September 2017 which reached 26.58 million people. This indicates a decline in the level of Indonesia's poor population of 633.2 thousand people. Most of the poor population are Muslim.
The government has tried to reduce the number of poor people but the results have not been maximized with indicators of the still high population of Indonesia classified as poor. The government is not maximally reducing the number of poor people in Indonesia quickly because the government does not involve Muslims in Indonesia as the majority population who are Muslim.
Indonesian Muslims must have strong motivation to abandon poverty by collaborating with the government and among Muslims themselves. Belief in some Muslims, that poverty is the destiny of Allah SWT causes Muslims not to be motivated to try optimally.
To reduce poverty and even eliminate the poverty of Muslims in Indonesia there are four components that must be actively involved. The four components are (1) Islamic organizations must play an active role in paying attention to their poor members. (2) Islamic financial institutions should care more about groups of small and medium enterprises owned by Muslims, (3) Mosques must care more about their congregation to improve the welfare of the pilgrims not only carry out the routine of worship, (4) Islamic education institutions from the elementary level to the tertiary institutions must play an active role in providing assistance from poor families to obtain education. The author believes that with the synergy of the four institutions, poverty will soon disappear in Indonesia.
