Description

The objectives of the research are to find out the language learning strategies applied
by English students and to find out the challenges faced by English student in
applying language learning strategies at English Education program of
Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. The design of this research was a
descriptive quantitative research. Subject of the research was the whole students of
the third semester of English Language Education Study Program of UMB Bengkulu
Academic Year 2019/2020. The instruments of this research were questionnaire and
interview guideline. Questionairre is a list of question that describe of something. The
questionnaire is arranged based on Oxford (2000) theory. To find out the data about
students‟ challenges in applying the language laerning strategies in speaking the
researcher used interview guideline. The interview guideline was arranged based on
theory from Naif and Saad (2017) who divided the challenges into seven; high level
of anxiety, age variable, less motivated, lack of communication, integration
difficulties, effect of low literacy level, and difficulty in grammar. The findings of
this research were; first, the language learning strategies applied by English students
at English Education program students of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu
were memory strategy, cognitive strategy, compensation strategy, metacognitive
strategy, affective strategy, and social strategy. Second, the challenges faced by
English student in applying language learning strategies at English Education
program of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu were high level of anxiety, less
motivated, lack of communication, effect of low literacy level, and difficulty in
grammar.
