Description
The objective of this research is to find out whether there are differences dominant type of self-esteem between male and female students and causes of low self-esteem students at English Education Program of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu in academic year 2019/2020. The design of this research was comparative research design. The subject of this research were 40 students consist of 20 male and 20 female of the third semester students English study program of UMB. The instrument used in this research was questionnaires of FLSES by Badran a Hassan (2001) and interview. The result show that from several types of self-esteem: language skills, actual use of language in the classroom, relationships in the classroom and attitudes towards language, the most dominant are attitudes and overall scores are higher male students and low for female students. Furthermore, there is a significant difference between the self-esteem of male and female students in learning English by t-test and t-table calculations (6.06> 2.02) that H0 is rejected and H1 is accepted and the cause of low self-esteem in the most dominant students is anxiety.
