Description
Tujuan dari penelitian ini untuk mengetahui kesulitan siswa bahasa inggris dalam mengembangkan pernyataan tesis dalam menulis argumentatif esai di Universitas Muhammadiyah Bengkulu. Desain penelitian dari penelitian ini menggunakan metode deskiptif kualitatif. Data yang dikumpulkan menggunakan tes tertulis berdasarkan teori Alice Oshima Ann Hogue (2006). Hasil dari penelitian ini, menunjukkan bahwa siswa semester 5 masih memiliki kesulitan dalam mengembangkan pernyataan tesis dalam menulis argumentatif esai. Kesulitan yang dialami siswa yaitu dalam mengembangkan; 1). Menyatakan topik tertentu, 2). Dapat mendaftar subtopik atau subdivisi dari topik utama atau subtopik, 3). Dapat menunjukkan pola pengorganisasian esai, dan 4). Penulisan pernyataan tesis terdapat dalam kalimat terakhir dari paragraf pengantar. Penelitian ini menyarankan untuk siswa dapat mengantisipasi jika kesulitan ini muncul kembali dan untuk dosen dapat memberikan solusi kepada siswa tentang cara yang dapat dilakukan dalam mengembangkan pernyatan tesis dalam menulis argumentatif esai. Untuk peneliti selanjutnya, diharapkan dapat melakukan penelitian pada masalah yang berbeda dengan cara yang berbeda. Terutama fokus pada kesulitan siswa dalam mengembangkan pernyataan tesis di Universitas Muhammadiyah Bengkulu.
