Description

The objective of this research was to investigate the effect of using POSSE
Strategy toward Students‟ Reading Comprehension at Third Semester English
Study Program Students of UMB. In this research, researcher conducted a quasiexperimental
design by using quantitative method. The samples of this research
were divided two clasess, they are class IIIA as the experimental group and the
class IIIB as the control group because class IIIA got lower score on pretest than
class IIIB. Each class consisted of 15 students. So, total number of sample in this
research were 30 students. There were two instruments used in collecting data,
they were reading test and interview. There were twenty questions as the reading
test of this research. In collecting the data, the researcher did two procedures of
treatment, namely experiment Class and Control class. In teaching reading
comprehension using POSSE strategy, the students followed five steps Predict,
Organize, Search, Summarize, and Evaluate. The students first predict what the
text about based on their existing knowledge, and then organize their thought.
Next, Students search for the structure of the text, after that they summarize the
main idea in their own words. Finally, they evaluate their understanding by
comparing, clarifying, and predicting.The finding of the research showed that
there is a significant difference in post-test results between the group that was
taught with POSSE strategy and the group that was taught with conventional
technique at third semester English Study Program Students of University
Muhammadiyah Bengkulu. Moreover, the finding of this research confirmed the
hypothesis of this research. It was suggested for the students, they can use POSSE
strategy to be careful readers in reading then they can build their critical thinking
while applying this strategy
