Description

The objective of the study wastodescribe and identify types and the most commontypes oflexical errors in students‟ paragraph at English Education Program of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. The design of this researchuseddescriptive quantitative qualitativemethod.The subject of this research were students at the fifth semester in English Study Program of Teacher Training and Education Faculty at Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu.The instrument of this research were students‟ translation paragraph writing, and also observation sheet. The lexical errors in student paragraph was identified based on James`s theory (1998:144). There were :(1) Formal Misselection;(2) Formal Misformations; and (3) Distortions. Theresultoftheresearch showed that the most common of lexical error found was Formal misselection (46.81%), while distortions (40.28%) and the last isFormal misformation (12.91%). Based on the research finding there are some suggestions 1). In the process of teaching and learning, the vocabulary teaching is needed by students to help them in eliminating the number of lexical errors found in their written compositions. The use of remediation or giving some feedback to the students may become the solutions for the writinglecturers to assist the studentsminimizing their promblems in lexical errors. 2). For student, Since the lexical errors influence the quality of the learners‟ writing skill, the students are expected to have good knowledge and learn more about the lexical itself. The students can check dictionary if they are hesitant in choosing the word that they will use
