Description
The objectives of this research is to identify, describe and find out what the strategies are used by students of English Education Program of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu in overcoming their problems in listening comprehension. The design of this research is descriptive qualitative research. The instruments of the research were questionnaires. The subject of this research was 51 students at the third semester. The researcher found some major problems faced by the third semester students in listening comprehension, those are the unknown words, complex grammatical structure, lack of concentration, pronunciations, speed of speech, long answer question, noises from around, and accents. The strategies used by students to overcome their problems in listening comprehension arecognitive strategies (84%), followed by metacognitive strategies (82%), affective strategies (78%), social strategies (75%), compensation strategies (74%), and memory strategies (72%). It can be seen from the percentage, that cognitive strategies is the strategies the most used by the students. The researcher suggests to the students to learn the completely listening strategies so they can anticipate if the problems they have ever encountered in listening comprehension occur again, and reduce students' problems in listening comprehension.
