PSYCHOLOGICAL FACTORS AFFECTING ENGLISH STUDENTS’ SPEAKING PERFORMANCE AT THIRD SEMESTER ENGLISH EDUCATION STUDY PROGRAM OF MUHAMMADIYAH UNIVERSITY OF BENGKULU

The objectives of this research were to investigate the psychological factors which affect the students‟ speaking performance and to find out the dominant psychological factors which affect the students‟ speaking performance at third semester students of University Muhammadiyah of Bengkulu. This research used descriptive method. The subject of the study was third semester students who were learning speaking for speech at English program of UMB Bengkulu with total 52 students. The researcher used questionnaire as the instrument of the research in this study. All of the students were given the questionnaire content of the psychological factors affecting their speaking performance. The questionnaires were adapted and modifies from Xiuqin (2006), Yaikhong & Usaha (2012), and Yeon-Kim (2014). The findings of this research showed that the psychological factors which affect the students‟ speaking performance at third semester students of University Muhammadiyah of Bengkulu were fear of making mistakes, shyness, and anxiety. Overall, the psychological factors affect the students‟ speaking performance with percentage of positive response about 57,00%. Then, the dominant psyhchological factors which affect the students‟ speaking performance at third semester students of University Muhammadiyah of Bengkulu was fear of making mistakes.
