Description
The aimed of this research was to know the English Students‟ Ability in Writing Cause / Effect Essay by Using Block Organization Pattern at Fifth Semester of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. The researchdesign of this research used descriptive quantitative research. The data collected used written test based on Alice Oshima & Ann Hogue (2006) theory. The elements of writing analyzed are content, organization, language use, vocabulary, and mechanics. Thisstudy used descriptive quantitative research. The result of this research, showed the students experienced obstacles in organizing and developing ideas in written essays. Whereas in grammar there are no fundamental difficulties. In the vocabulary found there are still difficulties in applying English vocabulary. For the punctuation component no fundamental difficulties were found. Based on the results of this study, lecturers are advised to pay more attention to the teaching of text structure in organizingand developing ideas, grammar, vocabulary, and mechanics. Lecturers should more often provide examples and exercises on essays of cause / effect to students so that learning goals are achieved well, especially in English subjects.The suggests for the student to be more active in learning the elements of writing.
