Description
The objectivesof this research were to know how accurate and inaccurate modal verbs which are found on students speaking for debate classes at English education program of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkuluand to know the dominant modal verb found on student speaking for debate classes at fourth semesters of University of Muhammadiyah Bengkulu in academic 2018/2019. This research used descriptive method since the researcher wanted to know and describe the syntactic accuracy in using modal on students speaking for debate classes. The object of this research was speaking for debate classes by English students in fourth semesters at Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. The data was analyzed based on the syntactic accurate and inaccurate modals used theory from Mindt (1995). The result of this research showed that; (1) there were397total modal verbs which were found on students speaking for debate classes at fourth semesters of University of Muhammadiyah Bengkulu. In academic year 2018/2019, the modal verbs included 239modal verbs syntactically accurate and 158 modal verbs syntactically inaccurate; (2) the modal “Can/Cannot” was dominantly found on students speaking for debate classes with total number was 255modals.
