Description

The objectives of this research are to find out the causes of reading difficultiesamong English students and to find out the dominant cause of reading difficultiesamong English students atthird semester English Education Program of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu. The design of this research was a descriptive quantitative research. Subject of the research was the students at third semester of English Language Education Study Program of UMB Bengkulu Academic Year 2019/2020 who got score of reading test < 70 (<grade B). The subjects consisted of 35 students. The instruments that were used to collect the data in this study are reading test and questionnaire. The reading test was to measure the students who had poor ability in reading. The questionnaire used likert scale and adopted by Reis (2016). There were 17 items of the questionnaire. there were two finding of this research, they were: (1) The causes of reading difficultiesamong English students atthird semester English Education Program of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkulu werelecturers' willingness to lecture over reading material, difficulty in perceiving the structure of an argument as they read, difficulty in reconstructing the text's original rhetorical context, difficulty seeing themselves in conversation with the author, and difficulties with vocabulary and syntax. (2) The dominant cause of reading difficulties among English students atthird semester English Education Program of Muhammadiyah University of Bengkuluwas difficulty seeing themselves in conversation with theauthor.
